Windrush Primary School

"Unlocking the potentialof every child"

Message from the new Chair of Governors - Anna Salmi

Following last week’s final board meeting of the school year, I am writing to introduce myself as the new chair of governors for Windrush Primary School, and to update you on the work of the school’s governing board.

The school’s governing board consists of the heads of school, two parent governors, three community governors, and two staff governors. The main function of the governing board is to set the school’s ethos, vision, and strategic direction. Governors work as “critical friends” to the headteachers, offering both support and challenge. We hold the headteachers to account not only for the educational performance of the school, but also monitor all aspects of school life to make sure the children at Windrush are able to thrive in a happy and safe school setting. While the financial oversight rests at the Trust Board level, the governing board is updated termly on school finances in order for us to stay informed and aware of the challenges and demands of the school’s financial situation.

It is important to note that as governors we do not get involved with the day-to-day running of the school – that is the job of the Headteacher. The school office is always able to advice you or to direct your enquiry to the right person when you have a question concerning your child or any aspect of the day-to-day management of the school.

Over the past two years, my fellow governors and I have had the pleasure of meeting and talking to many of you at various school events, from school fayres to parent education sessions, as well as informally on the playground. We also regularly meet with pupils at school to gather “pupil voice” – to hear from them about what they are learning, how they are kept safe at school, and to hear their thoughts about all aspects of being a pupil at Windrush.

It is often said that “it takes a village to raise a child”. While life in London often sets many a barrier for feeling the support of “the village”, we hope you are feeling supported and respected as a valued member of our school community. As governors, we are here to make sure our school is a happy and welcoming place where we all work together to nurture our children, foster the love of learning, and ensure high aspirations for all the children of the Windrush family.

Warm regards,

Anna Salmi
